The word: Appaloosa

Smokey

The grey horse came to her when he was a foal.
She was a girl of eight.

For the next thirty-five years,
Smokey grazed in the shade
Pranced when ridden
(How did he learn to do that?),

Nuzzled hands and pockets in search of carrots and apples
And roamed the neighbors’ gardens and fields
when he could find a weak spot in the fence.

Smokey, a modern grey beauty without tragedy,
Died gently at age 43 on the farm where he lived with the girl,
Now a woman as grey as he,
Whispering “Prance on.”
