The word: Warmth

Therapy

Her hands finger the ropy muscles
in my neck
in these shoulders cemented with bags of stress
wheelbarrows of loss

Her thumbs roll over chunky knots
urging them quietly
soften…
untie…

But when she circles me front to back
with moist towel
and hot wrap
the gradual build of warmth
penetrates
releasing a slow melt of tears

The word: Kindness

The Developer and I

I wrote the first letter
telling him—
this developer of land behind
where once deer and coyote and I
roamed—
telling him how I felt betrayed
by his re-configuring—
raising the level of dirt
so that our lovely view of foothills
would be lost
to houses rising up behind like skyscrapers

This betrayal
after a lengthy process of negotiation
sometimes contentious
but ending civil and respectful

He wrote back
expressed alarm
Had he messed up
forgotten a commitment
He remembered my concerned request
and his offer to make special effort to honor
because he appreciated
how far we had come in our relationship

He explained
with references to topography
uphill and downhill grades
and engineers and city standards and regulations
how they were doing the best job possible
they’d even deleted a building lot
to give them elbow room
though it would cost them
He expressed concern for continued
good relationship

I wrote back
telling him that the day before
I had decided to write him a letter to say
Dear David I’m over it!
because I was

I told him that my first letter was grief talking
I sent him a picture and a poem
showing how my backyard used to be
to help him understand how
gain is always built on some loss
I hoped he would always respect that

I reiterated I really was over it
Was seeing the bright side—
Increase in property value
Fewer worries about wildfires—
But suggested he might hire a counselor
for the coyotes whose mournful cries
we hear nightly

I extended an open invitation to visit
and enjoy my backyard
Agreed with him that yes
respectful relationship are very important

I expect he might write back
We’ll see
We both appreciate
how respect begets kindness
how kindness grows relationship
how relationship cushions change

The word: Flabbergast

Love this poem,Elizabeth! Catches a dilemma of parenting–keep ’em safe or let them take risks. Your mothering and your poetry both have my respect and admiration.

The word: Fabulous (a villanelle)

Sticking her tongue out …

The word: Unknown

Tomorrows

Behind you all your years
full of tragedy comedy adventure
kissed with warmth and love
dimmed by losses
riddled with suffering sadness truth lies
Woven with bright strands of laughter
So much that you’ve learned
All that you know
promises you nothing–
nothing for certain
in the cavernous unknown
of each next moment

The word: Majestic

Traveling

After weeks on end
the wonders of southern Utah
mysterious canyons
relics of long ago peoples tucked high
on south facing cliffs
Endless red rock variations
sculpted by wind and water
Dinasour foootprints
in desert sandstone
Until finally the immense
and the delicate
arches of stone

“Enough!”
I sighed wearily
suddenly immune
to so much majestic
craving the ordinary of home
